Socially Networked Scooters from Mini and Smart Use iPhone as Key

by Matt Forcey

Just ahead of the Paris Motor Show, which runs Oct. 2 -17, small car rivals Mini (owned by BMW) and Smart (owned by Daimler) have unveiled new electric scooter prototypes, the Mini Scooter E and Smart escooter. Both lithium-ion powered designs plug into a standard household electrical outlet, offer a variety of safety features not typically found on a two-seater (airbag, ABS, Blind Spot Assist) and use a smartphone for a key and instrument display panel.

In a nod to social media hipsters, Mini say’s that the “e-scooter app” (making use of GPS) will alert you to other e-Scooter riders in the area and flash your headlights while you approach them.
